Our House System
We are thrilled to announce that we are implementing a house system this year! House systems have proven track records of creating positive school climates and cultures that are embraced by students, staff, and families, and we want to extend a warm welcome to our new and returning students to BPS!
A key element of houses is the ability to increase students' motivation to succeed in school by fostering a sense of belonging among all students and staff. Parents often report feeling more connected to the school community as well. Each student will be placed in one of five houses and will participate in house-specific events throughout the year (families are welcome to participate in some too!). Additionally, during the school year, students will have opportunities to receive Tiger Tickets for their houses. These awards are for going beyond expectations in areas such as academic achievement, character, and uplifting others. When students work together to earn awards for their houses, they celebrate, support, and encourage one another to achieve excellence.
At BPS, we want our students to look forward to coming to school each day. Together, we will create a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Within the houses, you'll find a supportive network of housemates, teachers, and mentors who are dedicated to your students' growth and success.
The Five Houses
At the heart of our educational philosophy lies the belief that fostering a strong community and honoring our shared history has great value. To that end, we implemented a house system for our K-2 students, with each house named to celebrate Biddeford's rich past. Through careful consideration of the feedback provided by local history experts, the following five house names were selected:
Waterhouse (Blue): Commemorating Alfred Waterhouse's compassionate efforts during the Great Depression.
DeCary (Green): Acknowledging significant philanthropic contributions to education and healthcare.
McArthur (Red): Recognizing the benefactor of our public library.
Sokokis (Purple): Honoring the first Native Americans to settle in Biddeford.
Champlain (Yellow): Celebrating the French explorer who mapped the coast of Biddeford Pool.
