Boys Basketball

The Biddeford High School (BHS) student-athletes are proving that their commitment extends far beyond the field, court, and rink. As part of the school’s "Education-Based Athletics" mission, these students have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their community through a variety of impactful service projects this winter.

The BHS Indoor Track and Wrestling teams collected 41 frozen hams, totaling 300 pounds, along with a truckload of non-perishable goods that were delivered to the Biddeford Food Pantry just in time for the holidays. The Boys and Girls Ice Hockey teams participated in the Wreaths Across America effort at Biddeford's St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Cemeteries, while several players also volunteered at the BYHA Learn to Skate session to mentor aspiring skaters. Meanwhile, the Girls Ice Hockey team raised $2,400 during the First Annual Cassidy Petit Memorial Game, with proceeds benefiting My Place Teen Center.

The Boys Basketball team volunteered at the Biddeford Bon Appetit Meal Program and the Toys for Tots initiative, where they helped move and organize hundreds of toys for local children. Adding to the festive spirit, the BHS Band performed holiday music for residents at St. Andre's Nursing Home, while the Cheerleading team supported local businesses by distributing promotional materials for the Heart of Biddeford.

The BHS Swimmers participated in the Swim Across America with Thornton Academy athletes and raised $16,000 for the fight against cancer. Looking ahead, the Girls Basketball team is preparing to assist with the setup for Biddeford Winterfest on February 8th.

“I continue to be amazed at the selflessness of our student-athletes and their compassion to help others,” said Dennis Walton, Biddeford High School’s Athletic Director. “Their efforts underscore Biddeford High School’s commitment to cultivating well-rounded student-athletes who excel in sports and as active, compassionate members of their community.”

BHS Principal Martha Jacques added, "Our student-athletes are exceptional role models, not just for their peers, but for our entire community. In addition to their efforts, many of the students in extracurricular activities clubs are also helping in our community. Their willingness to step up and make a difference reflects the values we aim to instill at Biddeford High School."

These service projects reflect the character and values that Biddeford Schools strive to instill in its students. “It’s truly inspiring to see our athletes, coaches, and volunteers come together to help make our community a better place,” adds Walton.

Each season, teams within each sport choose various community projects to participate in. If your organization has a worthy project, please reach out to BHS Athletic Director Dennis Walton at dwalton@biddefordschools.me
