Biddeford High School Senior Ashlin Rue was recognized as the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology (BRCOT) Student of the Year at the annual Maine Administrators of Career and Technical Education (MACTE) ceremony on April 28, 2018. Ruel is enrolled in the Medical Sciences program and recently placed first with her team at the State SkillsUSA competition in Bangor for health knowledge.
Ruel is in the top 10% of her graduating class and is the president of Interact Club, a student mentor and sits on the BRCOT Student Leadership Council. She is also a member of the “Be the Change” Team and National Technical Honor Society. Outside of school, Ruel previously volunteered for Saco Meals on Wheels and plans to attend the University of Southern Maine next fall to study nursing.
Maine Administrators of Career and Technical Education (MACTE) is the official organization for Maine’s network of 27 career and technical education (CTE) schools. The mission of Career and Technical Education, as part of the educational system in Maine, is to ensure that students acquire the high-quality technical skills that will prepare them for post-secondary education and entry into an ever-changing workplace and society and meet the rigorous academic standards of Maine’s Learning Results.
“Not only is Ashlin an outstanding student, she is also one of the nicest people that I know,” said Medical Sciences Instructor Debra Hapgood. “She is very committed to her school and community. It is clear that she enjoys learning as well as helping others. The healthcare field is lucky to have her. Her dedication and compassion will make her an outstanding nurse.”
The student of the year is chosen by teacher nomination. Once all nominations are received, the final decision is made by the BRCOT Director Paulette Bonneau.
“I feel incredibly honored to be chosen for this award,” said BRCOT student Ashlin Ruel. “I’d like to thank my family and my instructors for helping me get this far. I could not have done it without them and their support. Thank you, again!”
